Fall is here — cooler weather, cozy evenings, and yes… a few extra home chores. Prepping your rental home for the season doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple steps, you can keep your space comfortable, safe, and ready for autumn activities.
1. Test the Heat Early
Don’t wait until the first cold night to discover a problem. Turn on your heat now and make sure it’s working. If you notice strange noises, weak airflow, or no heat, let your property manager know right away.
2. Clear the Patio & Yard
Falling leaves and windy weather can create a mess outside. Rake up leaves, bring in summer furniture, and store items that could blow around. This helps keep the property neat and safe.
3. Clean those Gutters
When clogged with leaves, twigs, and debris, gutters can't channel water away from your home — which can lead to foundation issues, roof damage, and even basement flooding. For more information on this, check out our “how to” blog.
4. Swap Air Filters
If your rental home has replaceable air filters, swap them out before the season kicks in. Clean filters help your heating system run better and keep the air in your home fresher. And, it can lower your energy bills!
5. Check Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Cooler weather means more time indoors and more heater use. Take a minute to test your detectors and replace batteries if needed. It’s a small step with big safety impact.
6. Adjust Outdoor Lighting
Shorter days mean you’ll rely more on porch and entryway lights. Replace any burnt-out bulbs so you can see clearly when coming home after dark. Solar-powered landscaping lights can be a fun way to brighten up your walkway as well! They can be found at most home improvement stores.
7. Watch the Plumbing
In cooler climates, it’s a good idea to disconnect garden hoses from outdoor faucets before freezing temps arrive. If you’re not sure how or if your home needs this, check with your property manager.
Enjoy the Season
A little fall prep helps your rental home stay warm, safe, and ready for cozy nights in. Take care of the small things you can manage, and reach out to your property manager if you spot bigger issues.
Now grab a blanket, make some hot cider, and enjoy the best of fall in your home! 🍂
