Cold Weather Checklist: Simple Steps to Help Protect Your Home This Winter

In late January, several cities across the United States are expected to receive an Arctic blast of wintry weather. This could impact Dallas–Fort Worth, Memphis, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Houston. Forecasts can change quickly so please check your local forecast and alerts for the most accurate, neighborhood-level updates.

How to protect your home:

When temperatures drop - especially during sudden arctic blasts - homes can be at higher risk for freeze-related issues. A little prep now can go a long way toward protecting your plumbing, appliances, and your home overall. Use the checklist below to stay safe, prevent damage, and keep things running smoothly through cold snaps.

1) Make sure your heat is ready before the cold hits

Test your heating system now to confirm it’s working properly. Always keep your thermostat set to at least 60°F, including overnight or when you’re away. Consistent heat helps prevent pipes from freezing inside walls and cabinets.

2) Protect your pipes during freezing temps

When temperatures fall below 25°F, a few quick steps can reduce the risk of frozen pipes. Run a thin stream of hot and cold water from interior faucets. Additionally, let interior faucets drip slowly during the coldest periods.

If you experience a loss of heat or power, continue dripping interior faucets (if possible) to help prevent pipes from freezing while temperatures are low.

3) Cover and insulate outdoor faucets and exposed piping

Exterior fixtures are especially vulnerable: Cover exterior faucets with insulated spigot covers or wrap them securely. You can find these at any local home improvement store, or online. Insulate any exterior, above-ground valves or pipes as well. If you’re unable to cover and insulate exterior faucets, drip them slowly to help prevent freezing.

4) Let warm air reach plumbing inside your home

Warm air circulation can make a big difference. Open cabinet and closet doors near plumbing (especially under sinks) to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. Be sure to remove any products that could be at arm's reach for children or pets! Keep garage doors closed, particularly if water lines run through the garage.

5) Keep your heating system operating efficiently

A small maintenance habit can help your system run better when it matters most. Replace HVAC air filters every 1–3 months to support airflow and efficiency.

6) Help prevent drainage issues

Melting snow and ice need a clear path away from your home. Keep gutters and drains clear of leaves and debris to allow proper drainage.

7) Stay safe with heating - avoid risky alternatives

If your home feels cold, it can be tempting to improvise. Please don’t use unauthorized or combustible heating methods indoors, as they can create serious fire or carbon monoxide hazards.

8) Don’t forget your pets

Freezing temperatures can be very dangerous for animals. Bring pets indoors and make accommodations to keep them warm. Do not leave pets outside on patios or balcony areas during freezing weather.

9) Need help? Submit a maintenance request right away

If you notice any issues with your heating system, plumbing, or appliances, please submit a maintenance request through your Resident Portal.
