Before you even set foot on a ladder, make sure it’s on level ground. Use a ladder stabilizer to prevent damage to your gutters and improve your stability. Never lean too far — if you can’t reach, move the ladder instead of stretching.

Put on gloves and start scooping out leaves, twigs, and gunk with your hands or a small scoop. Drop the debris into a bucket or tarp for easy disposal.
Work section by section, starting near the downspout and working away from it.
Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to flush out remaining dirt and check for proper water flow. Start at the end farthest from the downspout.
If water doesn't flow freely through the downspout, it's likely clogged.
If you suspect a clog, try spraying water directly into the downspout from the top. If that doesn’t work, remove the bottom elbow joint and use a plumber's snake or hose to dislodge the blockage.
